Chapelle of St. Martin

Oltingue, France

The Chapelle St Martin des Champs is an isolated church about 500 metres from the village of Oltingue, in the French department of Haut-Rhin, whose architectural history dates back to the 7th century. It is one of the mythical places on the Upper Rhine and is now a listed monument. It is located on the edge of an extensive, flat basin of the Ill river south of the last foothills of the Jura (mountain forest). The cultural landscape in the adjacent hilly area is dominated by small-structured orchards, pastures and fields in narrow, long plots as well as wasteland. In addition, the plain is criss-crossed by small streams and wet ditches. The hill country is dominated by meagre meadows with lots of rattles and yellow salsifies. Numerous fruit varieties can be found in the orchards. Typical birds are storks and meadow pipits, kestrels, tree sparrows as well as stonechat and red-backed shrike. In May, field crickets are widespread.

Tour

The walk begins at the church car park. Follow the network of paths north along the edge of the plain to the first fork to the left. Follow this path until you reach the forest, where you branch off to the south, or rather to the left. Close to Rädersdorf, you come to a track that completes the circuit and leads back to the Chapelle St Martin des Champs.

Refreshments

Picnic areas are available at the church car park. Otherwise, there are only few shopping and catering facilities in Oltingue.
