Cultural Landscape Olsberg

Olsberg, Switzerland

On this very beautiful circular hike in the Tafeljura-region cultural landscape around the village of Olsberg, orchards, flower-filled meadows and fields alternate with wooded areas on the hills. The former monastery of Olsberg, which is well worth seeing, was founded by Cistercian sisters around 1236 and secularised and abolished by Habsburg imperial decree in 1790. The orchards contain numerous fruit species and varieties, and to the north-east of the monastery complex is a low-trunk orchard. Heat-loving flowers such as daisies, meadow pippa, rattlehead, bulbous buttercup and meadow goatsbeard grow in the greasy meadows. Typical bird species that can be found here are the yellowhammer, the tree sparrow, the kestrel and the black and red kite. Some farms also keep rare domestic animals such as water buffalo and old breeds of sheep. At Schönbühl Farm, some of these water buffalo products and other farm delicacies can be bought fresh from the farm or conveniently from a vending machine.

Tour

The start of the circular hike (or walk, depending on the extent of the route) is at the Schönenbühl bus station between Magden and Olsberg. There is also a car park here so that travellers by car can also start at this point. From Schönenbühl walk northwards to the Schönenberg farm and there along the Interregio hiking trail. At the junction above Olsberg, continue towards Olsberg Monastery. The trail leads from the monastery to the Violenbach stream and to the edge of the forest, where you follow the hiking trail towards Hersberg. You then reach the "Sennweid" farm and walk down to the starting point or the Dornhof restaurant. The route can be extended as you wish on the many walking and hiking trails along the way.

Due to bumpy paths, the circular hike is only wheelchair accessible to a limited extent.

Refreshments

Two picnic areas are available. The first is above Olsberg under old oak trees. The second is at the end of the circuit under beech and lime trees with a magnificent view of the Black Forest. In addition, the Restaurant Dornhof in Magden offers catering and a beautiful panoramic terrace.
