The Buchswald near Grenzach-Wyhlen is a nature reserve consisting of four sub-areas and is a species-rich mixed beech forest on the bedrock of the Upper Mussel Limestone. In the undergrowth there are large, partly extensive, lush layers of boxwood. Until 2007, this was the largest natural occurrence of boxwood in Germany. However, due to a double mass reproduction of the box elder, large parts of the officially designated nature reserve have been destroyed in the meantime.

The boxwood forest is also the only German location of the spring maple, which flowers as early as March.

Numerous well-marked hiking trails and paths criss-cross this nature reserve. The Hornfelsen Trail is steeply sloping towards the south side. When looking out, it is essential to respect the barrier, as there is a danger of slipping when wet.

Refreshments

The Buchswald offers a cosy viewpoint with a barbecue area, a refuge and impressive views over Basel. The barbecue area can be reached from the forest car park via the Buchsweg and via the Hornfelsweg. From Switzerland, the Hornfelsen can be reached via the Ausserberg to the Horngraben.
