The Isteiner Klotz is a prominent mountain ridge in the Baden-Württemberg district of Lörrach that rises about 150 m above the Rhine floodplains. Since 600,000 years ago the Rhine was about 30 m higher than today, it was able to erode the rock and shape it into its present form.

The first traces of settlements in caves in the Isteiner Klotz are dated to around 12,000 BC. The St. Veith Chapel (also known as the St. Vitus Chapel) dates from 1200, although it is the only remnant of a monastery complex that has since been destroyed again. The ruins of Istein Castle are also located on the Klotz and there is an approximately three-kilometre-long circular hiking trail leading around the castle. Because of its exposed location opposite the French border, the Isteiner Klotz served as an extensive fortification during the two World Wars. Until the end of the Second World War, no fewer than 113 military bunkers were gradually built around Istein.

For nature lovers, the Mediterranean fauna that the Isteiner Klotz has to offer as a nature and landscape reserve is worthy of particular note. You can find diverse and special species such as the common pimpernut, the ground-flowered sedge or the feather grass - the only occurrence of these in Germany is at the Isteiner Klotz. You can also observe amphibians, over 80 bird species, no less than 350 butterfly species and a good 15 dragonfly species. The caves, tunnels and bunkers - concreted over for the general public - offer habitats for bats with small access points.

Tour

From the Isteiner Klotz car park, where two bronze plaques immediately provide the first information on the geology and prehistory of this landscape, various circular walks lead into the extensive area. The Klotzen circular trail leads to the St. Vitus Chapel and back to the starting point. There is also an educational wine trail. It leads in the direction of Efringen-Kirchen and from the signpost "Über dem Kalkwerk" back in the direction of Huttingen and finally in the direction of the village and church of Istein.

Refreshments

At the chapel there is a lovely picnic area including barbecue facilities and fabulous views. Istein and especially Efringen-Kirchen also have several restaurants and shopping facilities.
