The Rötteln castle ruins are among the largest and most imposing castle ruins in southern Baden. It extends on a mountain spur high above Lörrach, on the edge of the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland. The construction of the castle, first documented in 1259, was begun by the noblemen of Rötteln. Three of the Lords of Rötteln were Prince-Bishops of Basel in the following 200 years. From 1458, these margraves ("de Hochberg") were also counts of Neuchâtel in western Switzerland.
The Röttelnbund e.V. is a non-profit association that aims to preserve the Rötteln castle ruins from structural decay and to maintain them as a cultural asset for the general public. They offer various guided tours of the castle complex and run a museum. Children under 6 are admitted free of charge and there is a play corner in the museum for small children. In the summer months there are also castle festivals. During thunderstorms and rain, however, the ruins are not accessible.
The castle complex with its beautiful panoramic view from the high keep, the adjacent museum, the beer garden in the lower castle and the well-maintained barbecue area directly behind the castle together offer a lovely destination for families of all ages.
Tour
Below the entrance to the museum is the starting point for walks in the surrounding area. Among other things, the 13th stage of the Westweg, which leads from Pforzheim to Basel, runs through the castle.
Refreshments
The Fräulein-Burg beer garden offers small snacks in summer and the café is available for refreshments in winter. A short distance behind the ruins is a picnic area and a fireplace with picturesque tree roots.
