The Bachgraben is a former tributary of the Rhine near Basel. The walking path on both sides of the Bachgraben leads through a shady, humid oasis in the middle of the settlement area. Nature observation, jogging and walking are all possible here at the same time. Playgrounds also make an excursion attractive for families with small children. While the Dorfbach in the city of Basel is culverted, in Allschwil it flows in a narrow, built-up channel. Nevertheless, the footpaths along the stream and the species-rich riparian woodland are a popular local recreation area.

Plants such as black alder, black poplar and willows, which are adapted to fluctuating, high water levels, grow in the riparian woodland. The stumps of old trees are deliberately left standing to provide a habitat for many small animals as deadwood. With a bit of luck, you can observe squirrels, nuthatches and robins here. The many benches along the path invite you to linger and observe nature.

Playgrounds

For children, a detour to the Freizeithaus Allschwil is a good idea. There, children can play, do handicrafts, interact with animals and much more in the afternoons free of charge and without prior registration. At the «Am Bachgaben» old people's centre,  dwarf goats and shelducks are the attraction in an outdoor enclosure. Another playground can be found at the Gartenstrasse tram station.

Refreshments

At the «Am Bachgaben» old people's centre, the public restaurant «Ambiente» invites you to stop for a bite to eat. It is signposted from the path along the Bachgraben. The «Zopf Begg Lädeli» also offers various baked goods, fresh Birchermüesli or crispy sandwiches. There are various picnic facilities at the Bachgraben.
