The Muttenzer Hardwald is a quiet forest oasis on the outskirts of Basel that stretches from Birsfelden to Pratteln. With its scattered seating areas, barbecue sites and fitness facilities, the forest area is considered a popular local recreation area. The old tree population with beautiful oaks is attractive to many animals and numerous nesting boxes offer different nesting opportunities for various bird species, such as the middle-spotted woodpecker, which is rare in Switzerland.
Drinking water is produced in the Hardwald and the entire area is a water protection area. Small canals and some water basins can be seen in the Muttenzer Hard. In 2019 and 2020, however, the Hardwald had to be closed for a short time due to massive drought damage and the associated dangers for visitors. In the meantime, the forest has been reopened on condition that the paved paths are not to be left.
The excursion destination is suitable for all target groups and is wheelchair and buggy accessible.
Bird Sanctuary
The nature and bird reserve of the Birsfelden Ornithological Society is located in the eastern area near Grenzacher Strasse. In the middle of the reserve is a pond used by ducks and other animals. The Ornithological Society of Birsfelden offers regular excursions to the Hardwald, during which the reserve can also be visited.
Refreshments
The Hotel-Restaurant Waldhaus is located in the middle of the Hardwald forest with a beautiful view of the Rhine and offers refreshments. There are also several picnic areas. The one south of the motorway even has a Robinson adventure playground for children.

The Birsfelden-Hard station can be reached by public transport. In summer it is also possible to travel by passenger boat from the Basel-Schifflände stop to the Birsfelden-Waldhaus station. Travellers by car can use the parking facilities along the lorry parks.
