The Schartenfluh is the highest point in the Basel Jura with high rock faces rising from a dense mixed forest. It is a popular excursion spot with a restaurant and observation tower in the Solothurn municipality of Gempen. From the summit there is a beautiful view to the south into the Birstal, over the Basel Jura to the Alps, to the west to the Vosges and to the north into the Black Forest and over the Blauen towards France. The Schartenfluh is also a popular climbing rock with a variety of routes for experienced climbers. Warm, light-coloured rock faces and sunny rock-head vegetation provide an ideal habitat for wall lizards and a variety of insects.

Tour

The starting point is in Gempen, from where you follow the road upwards past the "Kreuz" restaurant. At the sharp left-hand bend, turn into Gempenturmstrasse, past the "Gempentüfeli", an impressive sculpture, to the "Gempenturm" restaurant. This offers a good place to stop for refreshments. Next to it is the lookout tower with a breathtaking view from the rocks into the valley. From the Gempenturm restaurant, you can hike in the direction of Dornach, past the Schlosshof restaurant with farm sales on the adjacent farm to the Dorneck ruins. From the Gempenturm it takes about 1.5 hours to reach Dornach, where the Goetheanum can be visited. From the Gempenturm it is also possible to hike in the direction of Liestal through the quiet Röserental valley.

The walk is not suitable for small children or wheelchair users.

Refreshments

Picnic and barbecue areas are available, especially at and around Dorneck Ruin. There are also various restaurants along the route between Gempen and Dornach, for example the "Gempenturm" restaurant or the "Schlosshof" restaurant directly at Dorneck Ruin in Dornach.
